The Fight

After 60 days of protest in Cochabamba, a city in central Bolivia, a group of people with disabilities set out in their wheelchairs on a journey to the capital to hand over their demands to the country's government and president. They are demanding that a disability pension of 500 bolivianos a month (the equivalent of about USD 70) be established for all people with disabilities. Is it true, as the minister for social affairs suggests, that the protesters are part of an effort by the opposition to weaken the government? From Plaza Murillo, the headquarters of President Evo Morales, the activists are divided not only by their exhausting 35-day journey through the Andes, but also by meters-high fences, police batons and water cannons. In the face of growing social pressure, will Morales manage to defend his meticulously created image as a defender of the poor and the oppressed?
